The Radford Rams showed off a different dimension of their offense on Friday, rushing for 278 yards.
They wound up needing every bit of it.
The Rams scored a big win in the OIA White Division as Tobias Powell rolled up 185 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 47-37 win over Kalani at Kaiser Stadium.
Powell’s total was the highest by a Radford running back since Alex Daniels rushed for a school-record 263 yards in 2005.
The effective ground game helped quarterback Cody Lui-Yuen complete 81 percent of his passes (21-for-26) for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
"We showed another dimension of our football attack offensively," Radford coach Fred Salanoa said. "Everyone thinks we’re a passing team, but we can run the ball, and fortunately enough, we have three running backs we can give the ball to."
Radford (4-1, 3-1) moved a game up on Kalani (2-3, 2-2) in the standings with a bounce-back performance following a 48-7 loss to league-leading Kaiser last week.
"We were irritated by that," said receiver Absolom Henry, who had seven catches for 118 yards and a touchdown.
The Falcons stayed in the game behind quarterback Noah Brum, who established a school record with 384 yards passing.
Brum finished 32-for-57 passing with five touchdowns — four to senior Brandon Roberts — to break the previous mark of 368 yards set by Ryan Kahana in a loss to Roosevelt on Nov. 1, 1991.
"I just wanted the win," Brum said. "I think this is a big steppingstone for us. This was a game that showed us where we’re at right now and what we need to do to get to the playoffs."
Roberts, who was shaken up on two different plays in the second half, caught 10 passes for 153 yards.
Blaise Manabe added eight catches for 89 yards and Trevor Yamashita had eight receptions for 81 yards for the Falcons, who are still squarely in the middle of the OIA White playoff hunt.
"It’s wide open," Kalani coach Greg Taguchi said. "We’re going to have to work our tails off to try and get ourselves in a good position."
Jameson Pasigan added eight catches for 123 yards and a score for the Rams.
Powell scored on touchdown runs of 68, 1, 10 and 23 yards.
Enrique Gruver, who caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Brum in the final two minutes, finished with 129 rushing yards on only 11 carries.
The lead changed hands five times, with Radford putting the game away with a 28-7 run in the second half.
