At one time, 8-man football was just a dream.
Now Seabury Hall has emerged as the game’s first powerhouse in the islands. The defending MIL champion routed Molokai 42-15 on Thursday to remain in sole possession of first place. Hana and St. Anthony round out the four-team league.
On the Big Island, Ka‘u has moved forward with 8-man football. The Trojans hosted Seabury Hall a month ago, losing 32-20, and have since played a number of BIIF JV teams. They’re scheduled to play at Molokai next week in another exhibition game.
On Lanai, there is talk in the community of forming an 8-man team at the high school. The island has a Pop Warner team, the Lanai Na Koa Rams, that has played a partial schedule for four years and is now in its first full season hosting games.
The high school’s assistant athletic director, Merrill Taguchi, said he hasn’t heard of any plans to start an 8-man team yet.
