Patients return to Ka’u Hospital as crews contain wildfire
The 15 patients displaced by the wildfire in Pahala returned to Ka‘u Hospital Thursday.
Hawaii County Fire Department Battalion Chief Warren Sumida said that the wildfire along Highway 11 in Kau hasn’t spread since Wednesday night and has scorched 5,239 acres.
Another brush fire that also began Monday on Cane Haul Road along Alii Springs and Higashi Camp roads near Pahala is 95 percent contained, Sumida said. About 400 acres have been burned.
He said that 19 Hawaii County Fire Department and National Park Service firefighters were working to extinguish hot spots on both sides of Highway 11.
Sumida said efforts by firefighters to control the blaze are holding up.
No structures or lives have been threatened or destroyed.
