Enjoy pancakes to help hospital
On Tuesday a short stack of buttermilk pancakes plus a small donation will add up to a huge benefit for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.
For the past eight years on National Pancake Day, IHOP restaurants across the country raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals; in Hawaii, Kapiolani is that hospital.
From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., all Hawaii IHOP locations will offer each guest a short stack. In return, diners are encouraged to make a contribution. Visitors to IHOP restaurants prior to Tuesday can make a donation of $5 or more and receive a $5 credit for any visit through Feb. 24.
All donations stay in Hawaii to support Kapiolani. IHOP has raised more than $10 million and given away more than 18 million pancakes nationwide since 2006.
NASA study seeks recipes
Pity the poor astronauts whose meals consist of reconstituted dried food. Now the public can share their favorite recipes as researchers for a NASA study test new ways of keeping space crews well nourished.
The study will explore new forms of food and food preparation strategies for deep-space travel.
Teams from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Cornell University are seeking recipes for their HI-SEAS — Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation — mission. Recipes should fit in one of these categories: breakfasts, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts and snacks.
Selected recipes will be tested by six crew members of a simulated Mars mission in Hawaii that runs from April to August. Winners will be announced in August.
Recipe submissions are being accepted through March 8. Visit www.hi-seas.org.
