High surf warning extended for most islands
A large northwest swell is expected to bring dangerously high waves to the north- and west-facing shores of most islands today.
Officials at the National Weather Service have extended a high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau and the north-facing shores of Maui effective through 6 p.m. today. Surf of 20 to 25 feet is expected on north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and the north-facing shores of Oahu, Maui and Molokai. West-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai could see surf of 15 to 20 feet, forecasters say.
Forecasters warn against water sweeping across portions of beaches, strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may also impact harbors, making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.
