NOTEBOOK
8 looking great
Ka‘u football is on the move, but Seabury Hall will make sure the Trojans can take another step forward without leaving the Big Island.
Seabury Hall, defending champion in Maui Interscholastic League 8-man football, will travel to Pahala to play the Trojans on Sept. 7.
Ka‘u is making its first foray into the 8-man game after folding its 11-man team recently due to low numbers. Athletic director Kalei Namohala had already begun organizing for a game at Molokai on Sept. 14, as well as a few games against BIIF junior varsity teams.
A big difference between 8-man and 11-man football is the width of the field, 120 feet instead of 160 feet.
Namohala’s hope is that other BIIF schools will make it an official sport, too. A minimum of three teams is required for official championship sport status.
"It’s just more realistic in today’s world," Seabury Hall athletic director Robert Dougherty said.
