Hawaii should enjoy typical tradewind weather this week as the high winds that whipped the islands Monday dissipate today, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service said this morning that moderate to locally breezy trades will last through much of the week, with typical tradewind showers mainly over windward and mauka areas, but occasionally carrying over to leeward areas.

On Monday, a high wind advisory covered on all islands, and a high wind warning was issued for Haleakala and Big Island summits. The wind blew brush fires on several islands and knocked out power to nearly 3,000 homes and businesses in Manoa and Makiki for more than two hours late Sunday night and early Monday.

The high wind alerts have been lifted, but a small craft advisory remains and a high surf advisory was issued for eastern shores on Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii islands until 6 p.m.

Forecasters said that surf will climb to 6 to 8 feet today before declining tonight. The high surf can cause dangerous rip currents and localized beach erosion, the weather service said.
