For the second time in three months, a University of Hawaii football player has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
Alema Tachibana, 23, a reserve linebacker, was arrested at 4:55 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Likelike Highway and Kamehameha IV Road, according to the police log.
Tachibana was released after posting $500 bail.
Head coach Norm Chow will wait until after meeting with Tachibana before deciding what action to take.
Tachibana is scheduled to appear in District Court on July 16.
The Warriors report to training camp on Aug. 1.
Tachibana is a 2008 Kahuku High graduate. He grayshirted that year, and joined the Warriors in January 2009. He redshirted in 2009 and played in three games in 2010. He was a member of the scout team in 2011.
On March 28, backup quarterback Cayman Shutter was arrested on an accusation of drunken driving. Four days later, Chow suspended Shutter indefinitely from team activities, such as meetings and spring training, for violating team rules.
On June 5, Shutter pleaded no contest in district court to a charge of driving under the influence. The court accepted the plea on the condition that Shutter undergo a medical assessment, attend classes on driver’s education and substance-abuse awareness, and pay court and class fees totaling $418. His license was not suspended.
But on March 8, Chow announced that Shutter would be suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season. Chow has not decided if Shutter will be allowed to participate in training camp. The suspension was based on "major" violation of the UH student code of conduct.
