Head-on collision sends 7 to hospital
Seven people were transported to hospitals Tuesday after they were injured in a head-on collision on Hawaii island.
The crash involving a full-size van and a four-door sedan occurred at about 1 p.m. on Highway 19 in Honokaa. Both vehicles had extensive front-end damage, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
One occupant was transported via helicopter to Hilo Medical Center. Two others also went by ambulance to the same hospital.
The four remaining occupants were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.
Police shut down Highway 19 in both directions between Pakalana and Plumeria streets as they conducted an investigation.
Suspect shoots man in attempted murder
Police are investigating a shooting in Waianae on Tuesday morning that left a 31-year-old man in serious condition.
A suspect remained at large.
The incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. in the Uluwehi housing complex on Ala Walua Street, police said.
An attempted murder case was opened. The weapon was a .40-caliber handgun, police said.
The victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.
Man grazed by bullet in Red Hill shooting
Paramedics treated a 32-year-old man for a gunshot wound after an unidentified male allegedly fired multiple shots at him and two others Tuesday at Red Hill.
At about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, patrol officers responded to reports of several gunshots in the area of Moanalualani Place and Ala Kapuna Street. Police said an unidentified male suspect reportedly armed with a handgun fired multiple times at three occupants of a vehicle and fled in a black sedan driven by a second male. Both men were described to be in their 20s.
Police said the 32-year-old man, who was grazed by a bullet on the side of his body, was treated at the scene by paramedics. The two other occupants, a 33-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were uninjured. Officers observed damage to the vehicle’s front grille and panel.
Police said the motive for the shooting is unknown.
Missing person’s body found in river
Hawaii Country Fire Department personnel recovered the body of a missing person Monday afternoon in a river in Papaaloa.
The person’s car was discovered in the river at about 1:30 p.m. Fire rescue personnel located the body about 100 yards away.
The body was airlifted from the area and turned over to police. The name of the missing person was not released.
Baby girl among victims injured in crash
A multiple-vehicle crash in Nanakuli early Tuesday morning left four people — including a 22-month-old girl — in serious condition.
The crash was reported on Hakimo Road at 1:25 a.m.
A man, 19, and three female occupants, ages 19, 12 and 22 months, were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
No other details were immediately available.
Fall from zip line hurts alleged trespasser
A 25-year-old man who fell about 45-feet from a zip line at Kahoma Ranch above Lahaina was rescued Monday night by Maui firefighters.
A fire department spokesman said the victim was one of three men on motorcycles who trespassed on the ranch. He used a rope to slide down one of the lines but got stuck midway.
The victim held on for as long as he could, but eventually fell about 45 feet at about 6:14 p.m., the spokesman said.
Firefighters wrapped him on a board, taking precautions to protect his spine, and hiked him out of the valley.
An ambulance took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Brush fire scorches Valley Isle acreage
A brush fire burned about 4 acres Monday near the Wailea Pualani subdivision on Maui.
The fire was reported at 11:17 a.m. and firefighters were able to bring it under control by 11:40. The fire was extinguished at 1:36 p.m., the fire department said.
No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. The cause could not be determined.
