Soeda, Zverev gain Maui Challenger final
Defending champion and top seed Go Soeda and unseeded Mischa Zverev advanced into the final of the Maui Challenger with straight-sets victories Saturday at the Wailea Tennis Courts.
Soeda beat No. 4 seed Tim Smyczek 6-2, 6-3, and Zverev — who upset No. 2 seed Tatsuma Ito in the first round — topped No. 3 seed Michael Russell 7-5, 6-3.
Alvarez takes third at UW Invitational
Amanda Alvarez leapt 39 feet, 103⁄4 inches to place third overall in the triple jump at the University of Washington Invitational on Saturday in Seattle.
The junior surpassed her previous best, placing second among collegiate competitors at the meet.
UH’s Samantha Balentine tied for third in the high jump after clearing 5-73⁄4. The senior also achieved a personal-best 3,586 point total en route to a ninth-place finish in the pentathlon on Friday.
Murray’s 34 paces Chaminade men
Bennie Murray scored 34 points to lead Chaminade to a 95-83 victory over Academy of Art on Saturday in San Francisco in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game.
De’Andre Haskins had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Silverswords (10-8, 7-3).
Alex Carmon notched 21 points for the Urban Knights (5-10, 3-5).

Regina Camera led the way for the Urban Knights (13-5, 6-2) with 14 points.

Hawaii Pacific falls to Fresno Pacific
Marko Cukic scored 19 points in a losing effort as Hawaii Pacific dropped a 94-87 decision to Fresno Pacific in a PacWest men’s basketball game Saturday in Fresno, Calif.
Malte Ziegenhagen added 18 for the Sea Warriors (6-10, 3-6 ).
Malcolm Griffin and John Taylor had 20 points each to lead the Sunbirds (12-6, 7-3).
Hawaii Hilo downs Brigham Young-Hawaii
Kamie Imai scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Hawaii Hilo past Brigham Young-Hawaii 67-36 in a PacWest women’s basketball game on Saturday in Hilo.
Jameia McDuffie added 15 points for Hilo (10-6, 7-3 PacWest).
Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo led BYUH (4-11, 3-6) with nine points.
