Abercrombie to name new coordinator for homeless programs
Gov. Neil Abercrombie today is scheduled to introduce a new coordinator for state programs on programs addressing homelessness.
The event will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the governor’s office at the State Capitol.
Abercrombie will also sign into law Senate Bill 2804, which establishes the Hawaii interagency council on homelessness under the Department of Human Services.

The bill also requires the department to conduct a study on designating safe facilities for homeless individuals, couples and families.
Hawaii’s former homeless programs coordinator, Marc Alexander, resigned Jan. 6 less than a year on the job and just days after the state acknowledged receiving an allegation that he had a sexual relationship with a woman while he was a priest.
The resignation left Abercrombie’s ambitious plan to end homelessness in 10 years in the hands of a 24-member committee.
Lynn Heirakuji has served as interim vice chairwoman of the Hawaii Interagency Council on Homelessness.
