Stars lining up for Pacific Links
The top three on the Champions Tour money list are among those who have committed to play the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship, Sept. 20-22 at Kapolei Golf Club.
The tour started in Hawaii in January, with John Cook winning a playoff with David Frost to capture the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. It is in Canada for the Montreal Championship this week, then takes two weeks off before its final six stops.
So far, 17 of this year’s winners have committed to Kapolei, including Kenny Perry, Bernhard Langer and Frost, who are 1-2-3 on the money list. Former Hawaiian Open champions Jeff Sluman, Cook and Brad Faxon and are also coming over, along with Craig Stadler, Russ Cochran and tour rookies Rocco Mediate and Esteban Toledo.
Mediate won his senior debut in February and captured his second title last week in Calgary, finishing seven ahead of the field with a 22-under-par 191 that equaled the tour record for lowest score. Bill Glasson, who finished second to Willie Wood at Kapolei last year, fired a course-record 62 in Sunday’s final round.
Isao Aoki, whose 72nd-hole eagle won the 1983 Hawaiian Open, has also committed, along with former Kailua resident Scott Simpson, Sandy Lyle and Fred Funk.
