While contributing to ‘Iolani’s recent success in golf, Lorens Chan also invested in the program’s future.
For eight weeks during his first three years of high school, Chan’s after-school schedule included working as a leader and mentor with the elementary school students enrolled in ‘Iolani’s junior golf club.
He leaves the school this summer having given the golfers who follow a lofty target to shoot for in future years.
Chan, the first golfer inducted into the Hall of Honor in a decade, is among six players to win two boys state championships and finished third and fourth the other two years.
He paired the individual title with a team championship as a freshman and led the Raiders to runner-up finishes each of the next three seasons.
"Growing up from when I was 9 through ninth grade it was just all about individual," said Chan, who started swinging the clubs when he was 7. "To put in that team aspect was a little different, but it was fun, and also college is going to be about the team."
The UCLA-bound golfer was closely acquainted with winning well before he entered the ninth grade. He emerged as a prominent figure among local amateurs while excelling on the junior golf circuit and competing in adult tournaments, including the 2009 Sony Open.
As a freshman he helped ‘Iolani win its first title in 18 years. Chan edged teammate David Fink by just two shots to become the first freshman to win the individual championship. Chan closed his junior year by setting a state tournament record with a two-day total of 11-under-par 133 while becoming the first two-time champion since Waiakea’s Jarett Hamamoto, a 2002 Hall of Honor inductee, won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.
"My goal was to play well and if you win one that’s great. So I’ve been fortunate to win two," Chan said.
