Pasoni Tasini had enough of coming close.
Tasini played integral roles in Baldwin advancing to the state semifinals twice in the 2011-12 high school sports calendar. But after the Bears football and basketball teams fell short of the title game, the state track and field championship on Hawaii island represented his last opportunity to experience the rush of the state title.
None of the other competitors in the discus could surpass his throw of 171 feet, 4 inches as he secured gold in the event and 10 points toward the team’s total. He added eight more with a silver medal finish in the shot put. At the meet’s end, his individual accomplishments helped push Baldwin’s boys track and field program to its first state championship.
"I couldn’t ask for anything better than to finish my high school career with a state championship for the first time ever," Tasini said.
It also capped his decorated four-sport career.
Tasini earned first-team All-Maui Interscholastic League honors each of the past three years as a defensive end. He also played on the offensive line as a senior and his production and potential at 6 feet 3 and 240 pounds drew college recruiters to the Wailuku campus before he eventually committed to Utah.
"I was always wondering how I was going to go to college and when I got offered it opened my eyes and made me realize I have a lot going for me," he said.
Tasini also won MIL accolades while providing a powerful post presence in four seasons with the varsity basketball team. In his senior year, Baldwin went a combined 20-0 in MIL play during the football and basketball seasons and both teams reached the Division I state tournament semifinals. Yet a championship remained elusive … until a last chance produced that first title.
"It was a great experience to win one for the coaches and the players," Tasini said.
