The numbers are astounding, but the spirit of Keiki Carlos is unmeasurable.
With Carlos on the mound, Mid-Pacific captured its second consecutive state softball championship this spring. Carlos was 17-2, pitching 114 innings and striking out 113 batters. That earned the respect of coaches and media, who voted her to pitcher of the year honors in the All-State selections for a second year in a row.
Her performance at the plate exploded as a senior. The right-hander batted .592 with four home runs and a team-high 26 RBIs. Her on-base percentage of .667 was among the best in the state. She was at her best under pressure, blasting a home run in a 1-0 win over Kapolei in the state semifinals. The next night, she went the distance again in a 4-1 win over Campbell for the state crown.
Mid-Pacific coach William Quinn was ecstatic about Carlos’ arrival on campus.
"I knew as a 12-year-old that whatever school she went to, she would definitely help that program," he said. "She played with my daughter and that’s how I got to know her and her talents. They were looking for schools … so we’re just fortunate she and her parents decided on Mid-Pac."
The work ethic of Carlos and talented teammates like All-State third baseman Ali‘itasi Docktor turned the softball program around. "It’s a night-and-day thing. We were the team other teams raised their statistics (against). We would get 10-run-ruled," Quinn said. "She’s not really a verbal, she leads more by example, but the younger girls really look up to her, especially our intermediate girls. They want to take a picture with her and get her autograph. It’s both her and Tasi."
Carlos credited coaches, including her father, Stephen, and pitching guru Tony Sellitto — the legendary HPU and Maryknoll basketball coach — for her development on the mound.
