Police were looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a 30-year-old Kaneohe man on Kahekili Highway early Saturday morning.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Matthew Fragas. An autopsy will be conducted Monday.
A vehicle, likely traveling toward Kailua, hit Fragas at 2:15 a.m. near Ahuimanu Place. He was not in a crosswalk and alcohol may have been a factor, police said. The vehicle fled the scene.
An Emergency Medical Services supervisor said Fragas was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Police closed Kahekili Highway in both directions between Ahuimanu and Hui Iwa streets at about 2:45 a.m. while they investigated.
It was the 24th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, the same number as at this time last year.
In Nanakuli, a 54-year-old man was in critical condition after a motorcycle crash Saturday morning on Farrington Highway.
Police said the man, operating a Yamaha motorcycle, crashed about 8:30 a.m. when he tried to avoid a vehicle that had stopped, possibly for a pedestrian, in the right Honolulu-bound lane of Farrington Highway, just east of Princess Kahanu Avenue.
The motorcyclist swerved and the motorcycle toppled, throwing the man from the vehicle. Police said the man, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital with critical internal injuries.
Police closed both Honolulu-bound lanes and one Waianae-bound lane to investigate the crash. All lanes were reopened about 10:15 a.m.
