Firefighters have largely contained a brushfire at Kawainui Marsh and police reopened the Honolulu-bound lanes of Kailua Road at 7:25 p.m., city emergency responders said.

The fire, which burned about two acres just Honolulu side of Kailua town, is believed to have been intentionally set, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman. 

Witnesses told police the saw two adult males leaving the scene quickly shortly after the fire began about 4:45 p.m., Seelig said.

“It burned pretty quickly, although thisplant is very green,” he said. “It’s like marsh weed.”

Police shut down the Honolulu-bound lanes of Kailua Road from Hamakua Drive shortly after 5 p.m.

Motorists were being asked to avoid the area. Kailua-bound lanes remained open.

The fire broke out at about 4:45 p.m. in an area above “the dike road.”

Three to four fire companies fought the blaze, as did an HFD helicopter and one tanker trunk.

The fire was not near homes, Seelig said.
