Man dies of hit-and-run crash injuries
The 38-year-old victim of a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night has died at the Queen’s Medical Center, and police are now investigating his death as a case of negligent homicide.
Ricky Donre of Honolulu died Saturday night.
Police are still looking for the driver who critically injured the mo-ped rider at the intersection of Isenberg and Date streets and fled the scene.
Police said what appeared to be a silver Nissan, headed makai on Isenberg Street at "a high rate of speed," made a left turn into the mo-ped, which was headed mauka on Isenberg Street at about 9:32 p.m. The man driving the mo-ped suffered "critical, massive head injuries," police said.
Police believe excessive speed might be a factor in the crash, which happened under a streetlight.
The mo-ped rider was not wearing a helmet.
Police closed Isenberg, Date and Citron streets in the area until about 12:42 a.m. Thursday while Traffic Division officers investigated.
Mo-ped rider badly hurt by hitting taxi
Honolulu police are investigating whether speed and drugs were involved in a critical mo-ped crash Saturday on Ala Moana Boulevard near Piikoi Street.
Police also want to determine whether the mo-ped, driven by a 23-year-old Honolulu man, was weaving in and out of traffic before the 5:35 p.m. crash.
The mo-ped sideswiped a taxi, a 2004 grey Chevy Astro van, traveling in the far left lane, and the driver was ejected from the mo-ped, police said.
Paramedics took the mo-ped driver in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet.
The 56-year-old Honolulu man driving the taxi and his four passengers, tourists from Michigan, were uninjured.
