The Local Motion Surf Into Summer contest kicked off Saturday at Ala Moana Bowls.

The waves were in the 1- to 2-foot range with clean conditions. Surfers from around the state gathered to compete in the largest amateur contest in Hawaii.

"Surf Into Summer has been going on for 25 years, from when it was at Queen’s till its permanent location now at Ala Moana Bowls," contest director Wendell Aoki said.

The contest features shortboard, longboard and bodyboard divisions for men and women of all ages.

Brice Yamashita of Mililani was one of the surfers who advanced out of his heats in the masters division to make it to Monday’s finals.

"I like this contest because they put a lot of effort and support into it and everyone comes to (it)," Yamashita said. "When you do good, it feels great because you went up against a lot of good surfers. The waves were about head high on the sets, with about one to two sets per heat. I rode a (5-foot, 10-inch board) in my first heat, then a 5-9 that was a little wider and thicker so I could catch waves easier in my second heat. It seemed to work out."

On the girls side, 12-year-old Brisa Hennessy of Kailua advanced to the final in the girls 17-and-under division.

"It was kind of inconsistent with the waves, but when you got out there it was really fun," she said.

Hennessy’s highest score was for a set wave that she ripped from start to finish.

"I am looking forward to the finals on Monday and hopefully it gets bigger and more consistent," she said.

The bodyboard men’s division, along with the shortboard division for boys, junior men and men, will be contested today.
