Tour explores archaeology and farming in Maunawili
A Maunawili archaeology and historical sites tour is set from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Guides will lead a tour from Ulupo Heiau to Liliuokalani’s Retreat and Kukapoki Heiau in upper Maunawili Valley.
"Participants will learn how the early Hawaiians managed the natural resources of the Kailua ahupuaa and how Chinese and Japanese farmers grew their rice crops and engaged in truck farming in Kawainui and Maunawili," a news release says.
The tour is sponsored by Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi and the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club. A donation of $10 for the tour is requested, and reservations will be limited to 30 people. Participants will carpool between sites.

Events on Hawaii island mark birthday of King Kamehameha
The public is invited to daylong festivities celebrating King Kamehameha’s birthday June 11 in North Kohala, the king’s birthplace.
The Kamehameha Day events include:
» 8-9 a.m.: Lei-draping ceremony at Kamehameha Statue in Kapaau.
» 9-10 a.m.: Floral parade starting at the county base yard in Hawi, passing the Kamehameha statue in Kapaau, rounding Kohala Hospital Loop and ending at Kamehameha Park.
»10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Hoolaulea at Kamehameha Park includes food, entertainment and educational exhibits.
