Blake Hawes of Kailua refers to himself as an "old-fashioned guy." At the age of 15, his taste in movies isn’t what you’d expect from someone so youthful. He enjoys old Stephen Spielberg films and grand adventures like "Indiana Jones."
The movie buff will employ his review skills at the upcoming KIDS FIRST! film festival, which runs Sundays from June 3 to July 15.
"I really love movies. It’s my passion," he said.
Hawes’ reviews are regularly featured on the KIDS FIRST! YouTube channel. He also serves as one of eight kid critics on VoiceAmerica Kids radio network, radio made by kids for kids, on a weekly basis. He landed the radio job after entering a contest.
"We needed to review a selected title and provide a video and written review," he recalled.
Among the perks of the job is meeting numerous actors, children’s book authors and company CEOs whom he interviews for the radio show.
One of his favorite experiences was attending the press junket for "Journey 2," where he interviewed most of the cast members, including Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson.
"Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is really down to earth. He’s an overall nice guy," he said. "It was nice to sit eye to eye with Josh Hutcherson and hear about his personal life. These are A-list stars. It was crazy and wonderful."
Hawes admits that nervousness affected him in the beginning, but he has since become comfortable with being on camera. While he’s enjoying the gig and all it has to offer, he hopes to eventually work behind the scenes.
"I’m more interested in producing and directing. I plan to study film at NYU," he said.
KIDS FIRST! FILM FESTIVAL Lineup includes feature-length films and award-winning shorts for toddlers, tweens, teens and grown-ups. Showings begin at 3 p.m. at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s art auditorium. Admission is free. Visit www.summer.hawaii.edu or call 956-9883.
