Chocolate bars win recognition
Madre Chocolate’s Hawaiian Triple Cacao Chocolate Bar has been named a winner in the Good Food Awards, announced Friday in San Francisco.
The awards recognized 114 products from 30 states, in categories including coffee, confections, beer and cheese. The criteria is food that is "delicious and made with integrity," much of it produced with local ingredients and with sensitivity to the environment.
Madre Chocolate, based in Kailua, was the only Hawaii product to be recognized.
The company offers classes in the making of chocolate starting with the bean. The next is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $50. Call 377-6440.

Cooking classes focus on health
The new year brings healthy-cooking classes to start off 2013 right.

Store holds sale before renovation
Na Mea Hawai‘i, the Ward Warehouse store specializing in locally made art, handicrafts, quilts, soaps, clothing, housewares and jewelry, is holding a special sale this week in preparation for renovations that will provide space for artist studios, gatherings and workshops.
The store will be closed from Monday through Feb. 10. Through Sunday, items will be discounted up to 40 percent. In the Native Books section of the store, select titles will be sold at discounts of 50 percent or more.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except Sundays, and until 6 p.m. Sundays.
Palace courses prepare docents
Learn about Hawaii’s royal history and train to become a docent at Iolani Palace in separate sessions being offered by the palace.
The "Iolani Palace Royal History Course" will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, starting Monday and ending May 20. The cost is $40.
The history course and volunteer "guardian hours" are prerequisites for the nine-week "Iolani Palace Docent Training Course," 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, March 4 to May 20. The cost is $20.
The training will add to participants’ knowledge of the palace and monarchy-era history and develop public speaking skills. The class includes reading assignments and homework.
