Hawaii auto sales skyrocket

Consumer vehicle purchases soared in the past year, compared to the year before, a new market report shows.

Light vehicle registrations shot up 20.9 percent in 2012 compared to 2011, well above the 13 percent national increase, the Hawaii Auto Outlook report found.

Car registrations dominated the market with a 26.5 percent annual increase, while light truck registrations grew 15.4 percent.

Hawaii Auto Outlook, prepared for the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association, projects a 6.5 percent increase in vehicle registrations for 2013.

The Toyota and Scion brands remain Hawaii’s favorite, with market share of 26.3 percent for 2012.
