It took a little more than three minutes for Arizona to demonstrate the Hawaii soccer team would not stay unbeaten on the road against Pac-12 opposition this season.
The Wildcats scored twice on set pieces in the opening 3:16 en route to a 4-1 defeat of the Rainbow Wahine at Murphey Field in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday.
UH coach Michele Nagamine took it as a bad sign when her team allowed a corner kick just a minute into the match. Sure enough, the Wildcats capitalized on a header by Jazmin Ponce.
"I told the kids I felt like we (regressed) a little bit. We started to show some signs of the UH past," Nagamine said a postgame phone interview. "The slow start. The lack of attention to detail."
A bid by UH (3-4) to improve to 3-0 against the elite West Coast league — UH previously notched wins against Oregon and Oregon State — was given brief life when Kama Pascua scored on a counterattack from 22 yards out in the 17th minute, cutting the Wildcats’ lead to 2-1. It was the freshman’s second goal of the season.
But Ponce came back with her second goal of the match in the 24th minute on a direct kick and Hannah Wong added a score in the second half, allowing the hosts to win comfortably, ending hopes of UH achieving a rare three-game mainland winning streak.
The Wahine were outshot 20-12 and yielded their most goals since a 5-0 defeat at Long Beach State on Oct. 26 last year. Freshman goalkeeper Monk Berger took the loss. UH fell to 3-2 in games she starts.
UH entered the match with several players questionable due to injuries. All played except freshman T.J. Reyno (sprained ankle), but Nagamine gave several of them extra rest in the second half with a mind toward Big West play starting Oct. 4.
UH continues play at Northern Arizona (4-1-3) at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
