Aging study lowers boom on boomers
For a generation as self-absorbed as the baby boomers, it must be painful to find out that, in fact, it’s not “all about me.”
First of all, they’re moving into retirement rapidly, some of them even still coping with the care of elderly parents. And then they find great gaps in the institutional and support services for their own aging.
Finally, they didn’t have as many kids as their parents, so the chance of some relative looking in on them is shrinking away.
All of this dour news comes from a national study by the AARP, mirthlessly titled, “The Aging of the Baby Boomers and the Growing Care Gap.”
And if Hawaii folks think they’re any better off, forget that. The local AARP says the islands have an even larger percentage of elders needing care, and not getting it.
If anyone has some happy talk to brighten our mood, now would be a good time.
UH students get free ride to opener
Hawaii’s Rainbow Warriors are a three-touchdown underdog Thursday against the University of Southern California at Aloha Stadium. But hopefully, that and afternoon traffic won’t deter UH students from attending, not when they get free bus transport to and from campus.
The bus leaves at 3:30 p.m. for the 5 p.m. game; it’ll return to campus a half hour after the game is over. Students will need to show their valid identification cards.
In addiiton to the game, about 600 students in kindergarten through grade 12 will put on a fitness routine of hula, chant and hip-hop, providing fun for spectators at half-time.
