Kama Pascua scored in the 61st minute and goalkeeper Monk Berger came up with several big saves to carry the Hawaii soccer team to its first win of the season, a 1-0 upset at Oregon today.

UH (1-2) improved to 4-25 all-time against the Pac-12 and earned its first win over one of its teams since a defeat of USC in Los Angeles in 2004.

“The kids … I have to give the credit to them,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. “I’ve frustrated them, I’ve kind of driven them crazy through training sessions and made it really, really hard on them. But I hope just to get a win like this just confirms and reaffirms why we’re doing what we’re doing.”

Pascua’s goal, a rolling shot in a crowded box on a corner kick from Hayden Gibson and tap assist from Storm Kenui, was the first of the freshman’s career and the first of the season for the Rainbow Wahine.

Berger notched seven saves for the freshman’s first career shutout in her second start.

Oregon (2-3) outshot Hawaii 17-14 and had a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Wahine players Skye Shimabukuro and T.J. Reyno had to be helped off the field with second-half injuries and did not return.

UH continues play at Oregon State on Sunday.
