Off-duty federal police officer dies in crash
An off-duty federal police officer died Sunday on the Windward side of Oahu when the motorcycle he was driving crashed on the on-ramp from Likelike Highway to the westbound side of the H-3 freeway.
Long Hyuhn, 47, was employed as an officer with the U.S. Department of Defense. The crash occurred at about 12:47 p.m. He was not wearing a helmet.
Hyuhn, a member of the Iron Circle Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, leaves a wife and two children.
Club president Ed Stankos said his group extends "our love and prayers to the family of Long Hyuhn."
"Long was a cop with a heart and will be greatly missed," Stankos said.
Hyuhn had retired from the Navy and worked with the club on charity benefits for fallen law enforcement officers, he said.
Man arrested in Kapiolani bar stabbing
Police arrested a 29-year-old Waipahu man early Sunday morning after another man was stabbed at a Kapiolani Boulevard bar. According to police, a witness saw the suspect lunge at the 28-year-old victim.
The incident happened at about 1:40 a.m. at the Geisha House bar. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and disorderly conduct. The victim was taken to a hospital. His condition was not known.
Fire department busy with hiker rescues
Fire rescue personnel came to the aid of four hikers in separate instances Sunday.
Rescuers were called to the Manana Trail near Pacific Palisades at about 9:15 a.m. to help a 52-year-old man who had slipped on a root and injured his knee, Capt. Carlton Yamada, Fire Department spokesman, said. The man was flown from the trail and taken to a hospital.
A woman in her 60s was flown from Diamond Head Summit Trail at about 11:15 a.m. after becoming dehydrated during a hike. The woman, a visitor from Japan, just wasn’t prepared for the hike, Yamada said.
About three hours later, another woman, this one in her 50s, suffered heat exhaustion while hiking up the trail. A fire helicopter brought her down to a nearby park.
Shortly after noon, firefighters were called to Palolo Valley, where a male hiker had hurt his ankle when he slipped down a 20-foot embankment. Rescuers flew him from the trail in the early afternoon.
6 acres scorched in blaze near golf course
Firefighters took about three hours Sunday to put out a brush fire that burned 6 acres in Kunia near the Hawaii Country Club golf course.
Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said no homes or businesses were threatened by the fire and that firefighters had the fire under control 10 minutes after receiving the initial call at 3:30 p.m.
Yamada said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
Just after noon Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a "red flag" wildfire warning for the leeward coasts of all islands. The warning was canceled at 5:19 p.m.
