Truck hits and kills woman in driveway
A 46-year-old Kahaluu woman died Wednesday after being run over by her own pickup truck in front of her house.
Police said the woman drove up the steep driveway at her home at 47-706 Halemanu St. and stopped her Toyota pickup truck at a locked gate. She got out and unlocked the gate, police said.
The woman went to the back of the vehicle, possibly to retrieve items from the bed of the truck, when it shifted gear and struck her, police said.
She fell to the ground and was run over, police said.
She was taken by ambulance in extremely critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she died, authorities said.
After hitting the woman, the truck continued to roll and struck another home at 47-704 Halemanu St., said police Lt. Robert Towne.
Brush fires flare in Wahiawa, Hawaii Kai
Kamehameha Highway was closed for more than an hour Wednesday as a brush fire edged close to the busy roadway.
Police said that the highway was closed about 4 p.m. between Whitmore Avenue and the Pineapple Variety Garden at Dole Plantation. It was reopened at 5:18 p.m.
Fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire that burned an estimated 50 acres of brush on fallow agricultural land near Whitmore Village.
Federal firefighters joined about 35 Honolulu firefighters to contain the blaze.
Honolulu firefighters also battled a brush fire in Hawaii Kai, taking about 21⁄2 hours to contain the 2- to 3-acre brush fire near Pepeekeo Place in Hawaii Kai. The fire started at 10:35 a.m.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire was caused by sparks from an electrical switch.
Man nearly drowns in Kailua home pool
A man in his 70s was reported in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after nearly drowning in a Kailua pool.
The city Emergency Medical Services Division reported about 3:30 p.m. that the man was taken to a hospital from a home on Kuulei Road.
