A refurbished Fijian canoe is suspended from the ceiling at Bishop Museum's Pacific Hall, complete with outrigger and sail, is from Fulaga island in southern Fiji. It was donated by master mariner John Koon. An inlaid wood floor map depicting the Pacific was made from American walnut (ocean, longitude and latitude), American cherry (islands and land masses), maple (text and illustrations) and wenge (map border), that measures 28.6 feet long by 11 feet wide. A new koa staircase leading up to the mezzanine was constructed by master craftsmen to blend in seamlessly with the gallery and hall.
