Bail set at $1M for drug suspect
A Puna woman charged with drug and weapons offenses was being held on $1 million bail.
On Thursday, Hawaii County vice officers served a search warrant on a Melekule Street home in the Orchidland subdivision where they recovered about a pound of heroin, digital scales, packaging materials, two firearms and $5,200 in cash.
Cathrine R. Kessaris, 58, of Orchidland was arrested at the home along with another woman who was later released without charges.
Kessaris was charged Friday with promoting a dangerous drug, drug paraphernalia and weapons offenses.
Maui High lauded for video
Maui High School was recognized Friday as one of four national winners of a Panasonic New Vision Award for its student-produced video “Behind the Beauty” at an awards ceremony in Secaucus, N.J.
The video explained how insect predators and urbanization are disrupting honey production and contributing to a decline in the honeybee population on Maui.
Maui High was among more than 50 schools to submit an entry in the “Kid Witness News” competition.
