Deep-sea water bottler to pay state $2 million in settlement
Koyo USA Corporation, maker of MaHaLo Hawaii Deep Sea bottled water, has agreed to pay $2 million to the state Department of Health to settle an enforcement action against the company, the department announced today.
The department in September 2011 issued a Notice of Violation and Order against Koyo for using an unapproved manufacturing process in the bottling of its water from July 7, 2006 to May 19, 2011, a state news release said.
Koyo sells water distilled from sea water pumped from a depth of 3,000 feet off the Kona coast. Its website says the water is "brimming with life’s essential minerals."
The state said tests of the water showed it "did not pose an immediate and/or substantial risk to human health." The state did not initiate a recall or embargo of the product, the department said.
Koyo continues to have a permit from the Health Department to filter ocean water at its Kona facility and produce a bottled drinking water product, the state said.
