Viloria defends title with 9th-round TKO of Romero

Brian Viloria avenged the first professional loss of his career, scoring a ninth-round TKO of Omar Nino Romero to retain the WBO flyweight title on Sunday in the Phillippines.

Referee Michael Ortega stopped the fight at 2 minutes, 9 seconds of the ninth round after Viloria landed a vicious straight right and left uppercut, sending Romero wobbling into the ropes.

The Star-Advertiser had Viloria winning 78-74 when the fight was stopped.

Viloria improved to 31-3 with his 18th knockout while Romero fell to 31-5-2.

The fight was the third between Viloria and Romero. Romero won a unanimous decision in August of 2006 to take Viloria’s WBC flyweight title. The two fought to a majority draw three months later that was changed to a no-contest after Romero failed a post-fight drug test.
