The summer Obon season honors the Buddhist tradition of commemorating family ancestors, who are said to return to this world to visit relatives. In Hawaii the colorful and lively festivals have become a must-do cultural event for residents and visitors alike, regardless of religious persuasion. The Today section will publish its annual Obon calendar May 28. To list your event, email the dates, time, address, sponsor’s name and contact information to features@staradvertiser.com by May 21.
Benefit luau for Habilitat features lots of food, fun

Habilitat will host its 12th annual luau featuring entertainment by Rebel Souljahz, K’Nova and Robi Kahakalau on June 2 at King Intermediate School in Kaneohe.
Silent and live auction items include vacation getaways, sporting goods, furniture, artwork, musical instruments and electronics. Face painting, inflatable bouncers and balloon animals are available for the keiki. The menu features eight courses of Hawaiian cuisine, with kalua pig prepared in a traditional imu.
Proceeds benefit Habilitat programs. Habilitat, founded in 1971, offers substance abuse treatment. Academic and vocational training is provided to help residents develop a new lifestyle with positive values and high self-esteem.
