Balentine takes third in WAC heptathlon
Hawaii junior Samantha Balentine took third place in the heptathlon at the Western Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships on Wednesday in Moscow, Idaho.
Balentine finished with 5,015 points and capped the two-day event with a second-place showing in the javelin, and third-place finishes in the long jump and 800-meter run.
Hawaii sophomore Amanda Alvarez took fifth place in the heptathlon, which included a second-place finish in the long jump.
UHH misses out, but Scolari moves on
Hawaii-Hilo could not extend its season on Wednesday’s final day of the NCAA Division II Central/West Super Regional Golf Championship. Brigham Young-Hawaii senior Jon Scolari was more fortunate.
Scolari was the highest finisher among the individuals competing without teams at Wigwam Resort, in Litchfield Park, Ariz. His three-day total of 2-over-par 218 got him a 12th-place overall finish and was good enough to advance to next week’s national championship in Kentucky.
The top five teams also advanced. The 17th-ranked Vulcans finished eighth. They were 12th after the first day and moved up to eighth Tuesday. They closed with a 301 to finish at 896.
Third-ranked Cal State Stanislaus passed sixth-ranked Chico State to win the team title at 288—865. Jim Knous, of Colorado School of Mines, was medalist at 73—209.
UHH sophomore Cory Kozuma (75—221) was 21st to lead Hilo. Travis Russell (74—224) was next, followed by James Hall (76—226) and Dalen Yamauchi (77—226), and Chris Shimomura (76—236).
Wolfgramm to play for BYUH hoops
Brigham Young-Hawaii signed 6-foot-4 forward Solomone Wolfgramm of East Palo Alto, Calif., to play men’s basketball.
Wolfgramm averaged 14 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals for Pinewood School.
LSU’s Lau places in the top 40
LSU freshman Randi Lau, a 2011 alum of Thompson Academy, finished in 37th place in the all-around in the semifinals of the NCAA gymnastics championships on April 20 in Duluth, Ga.
Lau tied for 24th on the vault with a 9.80, finished tied for 34th on bars with a 9.75, was 39th on the beam with a 9.55 and tied for 34th in the floor exercise with a 9.775 to finish with a total score of 38.875.
The Tigers finished in sixth place as a team, posting the third-best score in school history.
