Governor releases $37M to fix storm damage

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has released $37.5 million to repair highway damage caused by stormy weather in March.

The funding will also go toward safety improvements across the state’s transportation system.

About $15 million will be used for emergency slope repairs statewide. Most of the work is on Kauai and Oahu, the islands hardest hit by the heavy rains.

An additional $7 million will allow for emergency drainage repairs.

A $2 million project on Hana Highway in Maui will widen the roadway so emergency vehicles at the Hana Fire Station have easier passage.

Hawaii airports will also get upgrades. Maui’s Kahului Airport will see almost $9 million in improvements, while $1.7 million will be used to extend the runway in Kapalua. Lihue, Honolulu and Molokai airports also received funding.
