With four players in the top 10, ‘Iolani surged into a four-shot lead after Tuesday’s first round of the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf Championships. The Raiders won last week’s girls team championship.
‘Iolani shot a team total of 1-under 287 at Wailua Golf Course. Moanalua is second, led by John Oda. The sophomore opened with a 4-under 68 to move into first individually by two over ‘Iolani’s Erie Le and Na Menehune teammate Jefferson Yee.
Defending champion Lorens Chan, an ‘Iolani senior, shares fourth with Punahou junior Kalena Preus and Kamehameha sophomore Donny Hopoi, at 71.
Raiders Reese Suzuki (72) and Trey Kidd (74) are also in the top 10.
Oda and Yee are joined by Moanalua teammate Seungjae Maeng (73) in the top eight.
The final round will be played today. Punahou, which has won three of the past four state titles, is 15 shots back. Last year, the Buffanblu beat ‘Iolani by one shot and Moanalua by two. In 2010, the Raiders and Na Menehune tied for second.
‘Iolani won the 2009 state championship, when Chan won his first individual title. Moanalua is trying to win its first boys title and become the first OIA team to win a state title since Castle in 1980.
