The city is putting up $3.5 million toward the purchase of a structure in urban Honolulu that could serve as housing for homeless individuals with special needs, such as disabilities or mental illness.

City officials said Tuesday they are looking for a service provider, or coalition of providers, to purchase a structure and repair or renovate it for use as transitional housing.

The exact location is to be determined.

Officials say they will seek community input to determine where the project would be located within the urban district.

The money comes from the city’s affordable housing fund within the budget of the Office of Community Services. The deadline for providers to apply for the money is May 30, and officials said they expect to select a provider soon after.
