Hawaii island traffic accident kills 2
Two men died and two others were injured early Sunday in a collision of a full-size pickup truck and a compact sedan near Kawaihae Road and Queen Kaahumanu Highway on Hawaii island.
Hawaii County firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene at 12:16 a.m. and found two men, in their late teens or early 20s, had been thrown from the sedan. One man died at the scene. The other man died at the hospital, firefighters said.
The driver of the pickup truck, a man in his 40s, and the driver of the sedan, also in his late teens or early 20s, were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital. No information was released on their conditions.
Firefighters said there were indications that speed and alcohol might have been factors in the accident.
Police closed Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road for about four hours while the accident scene was cleared and investigators looked into the cause of the crash.
Unlicensed driver steals car and crashes
An 18-year-old Waianae man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly stole a car while intoxicated, drove without a license and crashed into a stone wall, injuring a pedestrian.
Police said the man was at a party in Waianae at about 6:45 p.m. when he took a 39-year-old man’s car without the permission of the owner, who was at the same party drinking with friends and had left his keys in the car.
The thief was intoxicated and hit a stone wall, police said. A piece of the wall struck the leg of a man walking in the area, causing minor injuries.
Officers arrested the alleged driver at Farrington Highway and Maipalaoa Road at 7:20 p.m. on suspicion of auto theft, negligent injury, driving without a license and a warrant.
