Board of Water Supply crews finished emergency work on a broken valve on a major Leeward Coast water main and residents can resume normal water use.

Repairs began at 7 p.m. near Nanaikapono Elementary School and were completed at about midnight, said Board of Water Supply spokesman Keoni Mattos.

He said the repairs were scheduled after a contractor found the faulty valve Friday morning. The work closed one Makaha-bound lane of Farrington Highway in Nanakuli until about midnight, but residents from Honokai Hale to Makaha were asked to continue to  conserve water to allow the water system to recharge.

The Board of Water Supply said water levels were back to normal at about 9 a.m.

The main supplies about 60 percent of the water to the Leeward Coast.

It’s the second time in at least nine months that the Board of Water Supply has asked Leeward Coast residents to conserve water because of trouble with the main. Residents were asked to conserve water for three days in August after a break in the transmission line.

Mattos said the Board of Water Supply is in the process of replacing the aging line to improve service in the area.
