The family of a 4-year-old boy who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Makaha has moved into a relative’s apartment in Honolulu from a transitional housing unit in Maili because it’s closer to the hospitals where family members have to make regular visits.

The Brown family has been struggling to heal from physical and emotional wounds after an alleged drunken driver plowed into family members sitting at a bus stop in Makaha on March 28.

The driver’s family has set up a fund to assist the family. To help, go to any Bank of Hawaii branch and make a donation to the "Brown Family Memorial Fund."

The crash killed 4-year-old Ashton Brown and injured his mother, Charesse Brown, and three of his siblings. Sisters Gala, 11, and Freya, 9, are still in wheelchairs, and Charesse Brown has to use a walker. Brother Alexander, 5, sustained fractures in his left leg. Three family members, including Ashton’s father Gregory, his 6-year-old brother Galan, and 9-month-old sister Cecile, were not hurt.

Potasi Uta Jr., 44, was stopped at a 7-Eleven in Makaha. He was later indicted with negligent homicide, four counts of negligent injury, and fleeing the scene of a crash. He remains in prison.
