HPU left out of NCAA field

Hawaii Pacific, which finished fourth in the conference standings, did not receive an at-large berth into this month’s NCAA D-II Softball Championship Tournament.

The Sea Warriors, who won the 2010 national title, finish the year at 32-18.

Two conference teams are among the 64 headed to postseason. Dixie State (36-11) earned the automatic berth, while Grand Canyon (34-19) was an at-large selection.

California Baptist (45-6), which won the conference title, is not eligible for postseason. The Lancers are in the process of moving from NAIA to NCAA D-II status.

» Melissa Kirby, HPU: The senior pitcher was 2-0 last week, striking out three with a walk while allowing no runs over 12 innings.

» Breanne Patton, HPU: The senior pitcher/first baseman out of Campbell was 2-0 in two starts with a 0.00 ERA. She had two complete-game shutouts, striking out 10 over 14 innings with two walks. She hit .400 with six RBIs and two doubles.

BASEBALL

HPU’s Kapana earns weekly honor

Hawaii Pacific sophomore catcher Keanu Kapana was named the conference player of the week after helping the Sea Warriors to a 4-4 week.

The Campbell High graduate hit .500 in eight games, going 14-for-28 with 11 RBIs, three doubles, a home run and seven runs.

» Blake Amaral, HPU: The senior right fielder out of Kamehameha-Hawaii hit .389 in eight games. He was 14-for-36 with 10 RBIs, two doubles and seven runs scored.

» Rylan Morihara, HPU: The senior outfielder-designated hitter out of ‘Iolani hit .400 over six games. He went 6-for-15 with eight runs scored and three RBIs.

» Kale Sumner, HPU: The junior infielder out of Kailua hit .400 in seven starts with six RBIs and four runs.

TENNIS

Local tennis teams vie for national title

For the sixth consecutive year, the Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team has qualified for the NCAA II National Championships, and will join top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii at the national tournament, May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky.

The Sea Warriors defeated Grand Canyon 5-1 Sunday in the West Regional held at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex. HPU will face Colorado Mesa in the Round of 16 on May 16. The undefeated Seasiders (26-0) had a bye into the national tournament and will face the second seed out of the Central Region in the Round of 16.

The HPU men, ranked No. 1 in the West Region, also qualified for the NCAA II tournament, held jointly with the women. The Sea Warriors open with Shaw on May 16.
