Ex-Crusader shines in Oregon spring game
Saint Louis School alum Marcus Mariota had a big day in the Oregon football team’s Spring Game on Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.
Mariota, a redshirt freshman who is battling Bryan Bennett to be the Ducks’ starting quarterback this fall, ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead his "Mighty Oregon" squad to a 41-14 victory over the "Fighting Ducks" before a Pac-12 Conference spring-record crowd of 44,129.
Mariota went 18-for-26 for 202 yards and threw one interception while playing the entire game. He also rushed for 99 yards on five carries, including an 82-yard run in the first half.
Bennett, a redshirt sophomore, went 19-for-32 for 209 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Coach Chip Kelly has said he won’t be naming a starting quarterback until the fall. The Ducks open their 2012 season on Sept. 3 against Arkansas State at Autzen Stadium.
UH’s Croson earns sand volleyball honors
The University of Hawaii’s Jane Croson, a freshman from Lakewood, Calif., has been named to the 10-player AVCA sand volleyball All-America team.
Croson and Ashley Lee are seeded No. 7 in the pairs competition of AVCA National Championships, scheduled for today in Gulf Shores, Ala. UH’s Emily Hartong and Elizabeth Stoltzman are seeded No. 8.
QB Club meeting features Vinton, Nakama
Sports media figures Dave Vinton and Wes Nakama will be the guest speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s weekly meeting Monday at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
Lunch is $15 and begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program following at noon.
Vinton is director of sports for Oceanic Time Warner, while Nakama is assistant director of information for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.
Idaho trips UH men in WAC tennis tourney
Idaho won two of three matches for the doubles point to beat the Hawaii men’s tennis team 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference quarterfinals Saturday in Las Cruces, N.M.
The teams split the six singles matches with UH players Jonathan Brooklyn, Dmytro Kovalyov and Chas Okamoto each winning in straight sets.
Hawaii Pacific sweeps UH-Hilo in softball
Senior Breanne Patton fired a three-hit shutout in the opener and junior Melissa Kim tossed a five-hit shutout in the second game as Hawaii Pacific swept Hawaii-Hilo in Pacific West Conference softball Saturday in Hilo, 2-0 and 3-0.
HPU improved to 30-18 and 22-10, while UHH is 24-20 and 18-13.
