20120418-0242 FTR LEI MAKING Workshop leaders, Joyce Chinen and Betty Ikehara lead a lei making class held at Hoomaluhia Botan Garden in Kaneohe. This is Mike Lee using raffia to tie his lei together. Emily Deai used button and carpet thread to make her lei. Emily said she learned lei making from Betty Ikehara. Betty said she was taught using button and carpet thread since it was relatively cheap and there was no raffia available then. Betty said using thread actually holds the lei together more tightly as raffia loosens up more with time. But raffia is a more natural way of building a lei. Betty has been making lei for over 50 years. PHOTO BY DENNIS ODA. APRIL 18, 2012.
