Arrested suspect responsible for 4 violent crimes, HPD alleges
Honolulu police detectives now believe that the man considered armed and dangerous who was arrested Tuesday night was responsible for four violent crimes over four days last week, including one involving a small child in the back seat of a vehicle.
James D. Walters III, 31, was arrested at a Date Street apartment complex late Tuesday by Crime Reduction Unit officers after a CrimeStoppers bulletin had been issued earlier that day asking for the public’s help locating him.
Originally described as a suspect in armed robberies in Waikiki and Lanikai, detectives are now looking into charging him with a robbery-kidnapping at Kailua Beach Park April 18, and the hold-up of a Kaneohe fast-food restaurant on Sunday.
Police said that while he was a solid suspect in the first two cases, Walters was not positively identified by victims and suspects in the two other crimes until after he was arrested.
Here is a list of his alleged crimes, according to police:
>> At about 4:55 p.m. on April 18, a 39-year-old woman said she was sitting in her parked car at Kailua Beach Park when the suspected entered and brandished a dangerous instrument. Police said the woman’s toddler son was in the back seat of the vehicle. The man ordered her to drive away and demanded her property. After a short distance, he told her to pull over, and fled the area.
