Partygoer held on threat, theft and gun charges
One of China’s top-ranking diplomats was in Honolulu for a brief stay before leaving Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s office said the governor greeted Li Changchun when he arrived Tuesday morning at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
The spokeswoman said Li left Wednesday morning. She didn’t have further details or the reason for Li’s visit to Honolulu.
A Honolulu police spokeswoman would not confirm or deny that police closed some roads to escort a dignitary on Oahu over the past two days, and referred questions to the Secret Service, which said the Department of State was in charge of security for the dignitary’s visit.
A State Department spokeswoman in Washington, D.C., said she didn’t have any information because the office was closed. No one could be reached at the Chinese Consulate-General in San Francisco.
Li is the propaganda chief of the Communist Party of China and the fifth-ranked official in the country.
Partygoer held on threat, theft and gun charges
A Hawaii island man was charged Tuesday after he allegedly pulled out a stolen handgun during a baby’s birthday party and threatened three people.
Chad L. Denis of Holualoa was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail. He was charged with first-degree theft, first-degree criminal property damage, six counts of terroristic threatening, two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon and two counts of failure to maintain bail or bond.
Police said Denis was at a family party at the Imin Center in Holualoa Saturday night when he pulled out the gun and threatened a 48-year-old acquaintance from Kailua-Kona. Other guests took the weapon away and he fled the scene. Police then learned the handgun was stolen.
Police said Denis also threatened two other Kona men, and later returned to the party and threatened the three men again, this time with a rifle.
After the party, Denis returned to his home and got into an argument with a 26-year-old Holualoa woman. Police said he threw a rock through the woman’s car windshield as she drove away.
Police arrested Denis at 10 p.m. Sunday.
