Hawaii surf team captures gold
For the first time since 2005, the Hawaii Junior Surf Team captured the gold medal on the final day of the Dakine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Panama on Sunday.
Dax McGill, 14, won the girls under-18 division with a final score of 12.60, while Tatiana Webb took third place with an 8.53, and Mahina Maeda finished with an 8.24, good for fourth place.
Kalani David finished atop the boys under-16 division with a 13.50 final score. Josh Moniz earned fourth place with 11.17.
Australia took the silver medal, and Brazil received the bronze medal.
Hawaii-Hilo sweeps Chaminade in softball
Emily Greene and Asha Prithviraj each drove in two runs, while pitcher Ashley Nelson scattered two hits as Hawaii-Hilo defeated Chaminade 10-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday in Hilo.
The second game was more of the same, as Shelby Vickers homered, Greene drove in three runs, and Amber Waracka and Jessica Pepin combined on a four-hitter as the Vulcans (24-18) earned an 8-0 victory.
Chaminade dropped to 15-30 and 9-23.
Hawaii blanks Nevada in women’s tennis
The No. 58 University of Hawaii women’s tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over Nevada on Sunday morning in Reno, Nev.
The Rainbow Wahine (12-6, 3-1 Western Athletic Conference) took two of three doubles matches for that point and then swept all six singles matches from the Wolf Pack (6-11, 0-4 WAC).
Hawaii heads to Las Cruces, N.M., for the WAC championships, which run Thursday through Saturday.
