Kauai surfer second in Beachley Classic
Rookie Malia Manuel of Kauai placed second Saturday in the $130,000 Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in Dee Why Beach in Sydney, winning $10,000 and vaulting to No. 6 in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour Rankings.
Courtney Conlogue of California won the event, the richest in women’s professional surfing.
“I’m really relieved to get a good result,” said Manuel, 18, who posted her best finish on the elite-level tour. “I’m happy to move up the ratings. I’m really stoked to make a final in my rookie year.”
BYUH beats HPU for PacWest championship
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team beat Hawaii Pacific 5-2 on Saturday to repeat as Pacific West Conference champion at San Rafael, Calif.
It was the Seasiders’ sixth consecutive conference title. The top-seeded Seasiders (25-0) earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national championship.
Annie Hwang, Sherry Lui and Tanja Rebholz won singles matches for BYU-Hawaii. Hwang/Lui and Marietta Tuionetoa/Yuan Jia won doubles matches.
Carrie Schuler won a singles match, and Zora Vickova/Lea Kruse-Utermann won in doubles for the Sea Warriors, the No. 2 seeds.
UH women’s sailing team places second
The University of Hawaii women’s sailing team finished second at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Championships on Saturday at Keehi Lagoon.
Hawaii qualified for next month’s nationals at Lake Travis, Texas, by placing in the top three.
Stanford won the six-school regatta with 34 points. Hawaii finished with 59. USC was third and UCLA fourth.
UHH sweeps Chaminade in softball
Jessica Pepin scattered seven hits in a complete-game performance, and Aisha Sueda homered and drove in two runs as host Hawaii-Hilo beat Chaminade 3-2 to sweep a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.
In the first game, Nicole Alconcel and Emily Green each drove in two runs and Amber Waracka pitched a complete game in the Vulcans’ 7-4 victory. Chaminade’s Rayna Strom-Okimoto homered and had three RBIs.
UHH is 22-18 and 16-11; Chaminade is 15-28 and 9-21.
