The Campbell softball team found a bizarre and dramatic way to repeat as Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference softball champion Friday night.
The Sabers scored the go-ahead run on a botched squeeze play in the top of the eighth, then benefitted from a reversal of a home run call in the bottom half of the inning in a 4-3 victory at Central Oahu Regional Park.
In the Campbell eighth, Kawehi Kahana hit a pop up in front of the plate and the catcher couldn’t make the grab. The ball rolled to the backstop, which allowed Kahana to reach second. Taylor Hoohuli’s sacrifice moved Kahana to third. With Summer Palipti at the plate, the Sabers attempted a squeeze play, but Palipti missed the pitch. The Kapolei catcher tried to throw Kahana out as she dived back to third, but the throw went into left field, allowing Kahana to score.
"Summer botched the bunt. I yelled back (for Kahana to return to third). The ball got past the third baseman and I just yelled, ‘Get up and go.’ " Campbell first-year coach Michael Hermosura said.
There was more drama in the bottom of the eighth. The Hurricanes’ Ashalynn Umiamaka belted a pitch to center and Jessica Arata made the catch as she crashed through the fence.
The umpires originally ruled it a home run, huddled for a few minutes, then reversed the call and allowed the catch. After a popout and a fielding error by the second baseman, Palipti got a groundout to end it.
"They called it a home run and I was kinda in shock," Arata said. "I thought I was still in the field when I caught the ball.
"After they changed the call, I was very happy."
"It’s a catch and carry," said Hermosura, saying Arata had one foot down and one foot on the fence. "The umpire said she went to the fence, had her leg touching the fence and went over. I asked for clarification and the crew came together and made the correct decision."
Campbell’s Palipti pitched a seven-hitter with one strikeout.
Kapolei’s Winona Pauline pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts. She struck out the side in the second and sixth innings.
Kapolei’s Mikela Manewa belted a solo homer to left center with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it at 3.
In the Campbell fifth, Kahana hit a solo homer to left-center field with two outs to give the Sabers a 3-2 lead.
Pauline’s two-run home run to center field gave Kapolei a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Campbell tied it at 2 in the third without the benefit of a hit. Kaycee Konohia was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. No. 9 hitter Arata laid down a sacrifice bunt to the first baseman, who threw wide of the second baseman covering the bag. The ball wound up in right field, which allowed Konohia and Arata to score.
Kapolei, the West champion, had beaten Campbell, the West’s No. 4 team, twice during the regular season.
