A doubleheader made for a long day at Les Murakami Stadium.
Saint Mary’s also made it a frustrating one for the Hawaii baseball team.
Despite only scoring in three of the 17 innings played on Sunday, the Gaels pulled off a doubleheader sweep of the Rainbows, winning 6-2 in 10 innings and 5-3 in seven innings to split UH’s final nonconference series of the season.
Brenden Kalfus hit the go-ahead three-run double in the 10th inning of the first game, which was originally scheduled for seven.

Cole Norton hit a two-run single and Collin Ferguson added a two-run double as the Gaels (17-17) scored all five runs in the fifth inning of the second game, which was enough to pull off the sweep.
"It was a long day of bad baseball," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "You can’t walk the bases loaded in the first game … a passed ball and an error in the second game cost us that game … we really gift-wrapped a couple of wins (for Saint Mary’s) today."
The Rainbows (21-15) had won seven of eight and started the day in search of their first four-game sweep of the season.
Senior Collin Bennett pounded the ball all series long, batting .667 (8-for-12) with four runs and six RBIs to raise his average 40 points to a team-best .328.
But after scoring seven runs in a victory on Saturday, UH could only muster five runs over two games on Sunday.
"It makes for an awful lot of pressure on our pitching and our defense when you can only score one, two, three runs a game," Trapasso said. "We’ve been winning a lot of those games, but you’re bound to have a day like this where you make a mistake and you lose that game that you’ve been winning 2-1."
Senior Kyle Barraclough held UH to one hit over the first six innings in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead into the last of the seventh.
The Rainbows mounted another late-inning rally as Kaeo Aliviado hit a leadoff single and Pi‘ikea Kitamura drew a walk to put the tying run on first with nobody out.
The Gaels turned to closer Patrick Keane to finish the game, but Bennett drilled a two-run single up the middle with one out to tie it at 2-all and force extra innings.
"It’s been that kind of year for us," said Saint Mary’s coach Jedd Soto, whose team had lost nine of 10, including three games in the last two weeks in the final at-bat. "But it’s nice to see a little swag where they’re up 2-0, they give up the lead and they keep battling and hanging in."
The Rainbows had an opportunity to win it in the ninth, but Bennett was thrown out at home trying to score with two outs.
After a two-out double put the winning run on second, Breland Almadova hit a hard single to right. Bennett was waved in by third base coach Rusty McNamara, but was thrown out by a good 20 feet by Kalfus in right.
"Basically coach Mack sent me and I was out by a lot," Bennett said. "Breland hit that pretty hard and I didn’t see the guy come up throwing, but obviously he made a good throw."
The Gaels took advantage in the next half inning, scoring four runs off reliever David Longville (1-2), who pitched the final three innings.
Norton led off with a single, and two walks loaded the bases for Kalfus, who drilled a bases-clearing double over Almadova’s head in center to give the Gaels the lead.
Patrick Wisdom hit a two-run double in the third off UH starter Scott Squier, who didn’t allow a hit from then on. He retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced and gave up four hits total in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
UH staffed the second game with freshman Lawrence Chew facing the minimum in two innings after earning his first save in Friday’s 3-2 win.
Stephen Ventimilia singled and scored in the first and Zack Swasey hit an RBI double to score Bennett for a 2-0 UH lead in the second.
Saint Mary’s scored five runs off three different pitchers in the fifth, roughing up freshman Kyle Dowdy (1-3), who surrendered three runs on two hits while recording only one out.
Hawaii put the tying run on first with one out in the sixth, but Thomas Cortese struck out UH’s eighth and ninth hitters, who were a combined 0-for-11 on the day, to end the threat.
The Rainbows will practice at home on Tuesday before leaving Wednesday for a two-week road trip beginning at San Jose State on Friday.
The Spartans are the only remaining undefeated team in Western Athletic Conference play after sweeping Fresno State over the weekend.
"It starts with that one practice we have before we leave and take care of the things we have to do," said Almadova, who was 6-for-10 against the Gaels to raise his average to .293. "I think this road trip is going to be huge for us and if we can come out with a winning record, we’ll be in good shape."
