Moanalua packed a day’s worth of offense in a single inning on Saturday.
Na Menehune had seven hits through seven regulation innings against an inspired Roosevelt squad, then added seven more in the eighth to romp over the Rough Riders 8-1 at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Roosevelt pitcher Edison Sakata held Na Menehune in check through seven innings, needing 89 pitches to take his team to the eighth inning tied at 1. He didn’t have many more pitches in him.
"We were in uncharted territory with him, he hasn’t gone that long all season," Roosevelt coach Les Loo said. "He is such a gamer, we had to leave him in there to get out of trouble for himself. He just ran out of gas."
Sakata got two outs in the eighth before Moanalua got to him, blasting three straight hits, with Jake Nakagawa’s double in the gap in right field driving in two runs. Nakagawa also drove in Moanlaua’s run in the second inning on a single to right field.
"He’s been struggling all year," Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said, "but he has finally started to hit the ball and I am happy for him. He’s a good kid."
Sakata left the mound in favor of Mikaele Caris after Nolan Kometani deposited Sakata’s 99th pitch into center field to drive in Nakagawa to make it 5-1.
Na Menehune had no trouble figuring out the new pitcher, with Kekoa Kaulukukui sending his first pitch over the fence in left field. Four more Na Menehune got on base before Caris got Mark Kuga to fly to left to end the nightmare. Yamada would call it luck, but four hitters pounded the ball for extra bases in the eighth inning.
"The hits just fell in that time, that’s all," Yamada said. "I expected a tough game from Roosevelt, they have a great team and their record doesn’t show who they are."
Moanalua improved to 9-3, while Roosevelt dropped to 3-9.
The Rough Riders, who had a runner on in every inning but brought only one of them home, got a leadoff single from Keola Tamanaha in the eighth but stranded him there when Tyler Fujimoto set down the bottom of Roosevelt’s order to give Moanalua its ninth win.
Roosevelt scored its run in the sixth when Leighton Kahooilihala doubled in Michael Matsuoka. The Rough Riders stranded 11 runners in the game.
The teams now wait for the OIA tournament to begin in a week and a half. Moanalua will get the OIA Red East’s second seed and Roosevelt will have to figure out how to score runs and find a second pitcher. The Rough Riders have scored more than three runs in only four of their 12 league games.
"It shows we can keep up with the top-level teams," Loo said. "Same thing with Kailua last week, we hang around and then get blasted. These kids won’t quit, though."
